australian shepherd

The Australian Shepherd lives for his job, which involved herding livestock, and as an all-around farm and ranch dog. Australian Shepherds are agile and adaptive and need a lot of activity and a sense of purpose to feel truly content. "Aussies" as they are called excel in AKC events due to their intelligence, obedience, and versatility. The coats of Australian Shepherds are generally blue merle, red merle, black, and red with or without white markings.

Despite the name Australian Shepherd, the breed probably developed in the Pyrenees Mountains between France and Spain. The name Australian Shepherd came to be due to its association with Basque shepherds who came from Australia to America in the 1800's. The Australian Shepherd came to be known by many names including the Pastor Dog, Blue Heeler, New Mexican Shepherd, and California Shepherd.
