The Bichon Frise is known as a very cheerful canine with a sturdy yet small build and an inquisitive expression. The Bichon Frise has a plumed tail, which it hangs merrily over its back and the breed's coat is commonly compared to a cotton ball. The coat of the Bichon Frise is always white, yet has can have shadings of apricot, cream, or buff around the body and ears.

Appearing in the 13th Century as a descendent of the Water Spaniel, the Bichon Frise was traded by Spanish sailors and moved over continents. The Bichon Frise became a 16th century favorite in the French Royal Courts and was also favored by the painters of the Spanish school.
