How To Clean Your Home When It’s Pet Friendly |
|
How many times have you heard someone say that they don't have a pet because they don't want all the extra work involved with keeping their house clean, and it's true. Keeping your house clean when you have pets is a task, but it's an achievable task when done properly.
Threes no doubt that the amount of dust and dirt flying around your home increases with dogs running in and out all day, or cat boxes being stirred up. This alone can mean additional cleaning, not to mention all that pesky hair flying around.
So, how do we tackle the hair, dust, dirt and dander?
Let's start with the hair. While there is no dog that doesn't shed, unless it's a Chinese crested hairless without hair, all dogs like people shed. We shed our hair and skin, just like dogs do. Cats have dander they shed along with their hair. Brushing your pet daily and groomed will help to cut down on the amount of hair strewn about the house. Double coated breeds such as German Shephards and Chows need to be brushed extra during the two times a year they blow their coats as well as puppies that are losing their puppy coats and getting their adult coats. Run you sweeper often and change or empty the bag every time you use it. Do not let musty hair sit in your vacuum. Be sure to keep your filter clean also. Concentrate on the areas that your pets are mainly in.
Brushing your pet outside or taking them to a groomer is a sure way to keep hairballs out of your house. For cats, brushing them also helps to cut down on them ingesting hair when cleaning themselves and like most cats, throwing it all back up, all over the house.
To clean hair off your couch and chairs, a soft, damp rag works well, and if you put a little good smelling cleaner on it, your furniture will smell better too.
Keeping the litter box clean for the cats helps keep those nasty smells down. For every two cats, you should have a litter box. You should clean them daily and empty them completely every 10 to 14 days. They should be scrubbed well during the emptying out time. A good dishwashing soap and Clorox mixture should do the trick for cleaning. Dogs should naturally potty outside, but in case they do have that occasional accident, it needs to be cleaned up immediately and rugs should be scrubbed with a steam cleaner if possible or an enzyme cleaner. Some small dogs use wee wee pads in the house, and these should be disposed of as soon as they are soiled in an outside garbage can.
For a home with cats that may walk on the counter, always clean your counters before any food preparation with a sanitizing cleaner. Keep utensils and cutting boards you may use out of their reach.
Change your filters regularly. Using a Hepa Filter can also be more effective even though they can be costly. This will help cut down on the dust and dander that is flying about. If you have an ionizer, use it to remove smells. If you have allergies, an ionizer can work wonders for keeping allergic reactions down from your pets.
When using cleaning products or air fresheners, it is best to use ones that say they are for pet odors. These products are formulated to handle the kind of pet smells that your house may have. |

I use vinegar and water 50/50 in a spray bottle and it works well. The smell fades quickly after use and keeps things clean, especially after picking up the wee wee pads and cleaning underneath. A natural solution. I think it kills 99 per cent of the bacteria too.
