Halloween Safety For Pets
There is partying, and candy, and spooky costumes. There are ghouls and skeletons and loud scary music, but there is also something else, danger for your pet. Halloween can be lots of fun, but only if you celebrate it safely, and that goes especially for those of you with pets.

There are a couple simple rules to make your dogs Halloween a little less scary but safe for them.

If you are going to dress your pet up, make sure you have a properly fit costume and one that does not obstruct their site or hearing or ability to move. One of the places that I have found great, safe, comfortable costumes is BuyCostumes.com They have quite a variety at fantastic prices. Even if you have a large dog, you can find a costume for them that will not inhibit their ability to move around. Remember also to pick out a costume that suits your dog’s ears. Something like the Dog Riders Headless Horseman costume may be best suited for larger dogs, while the Pirate Puppy Costume or the Prisoner Dog Costume are best suited for dogs the ears don’t stand up on. Ranging in price from $8.99 on up, get them while they are on sale or run out of your favorite.

When trick or treaters arrive, it’s always best to have your pet put away safely. All those screaming kids and costumes can be quite disturbing, and in order to avoid a possible bite to the trick or treaters, or upsetting your pet, its best to have them not exposed.

Keep any lit candles out of the way of your cats that may be jumping through the house with all the excitement. You wouldn’t want that beautiful tail to go up I flames.

Keep all that candy up where your pet cannot get to it. Those chocolate smells are quite tempting, however, the amount of pets taken to animal emergency during Halloween more then double.

If you have pets that run loose outside, be sure to put them in a safe area that they cannot get out of.

Above all, use common sense when trick or treating for your children and your pets. Be sure that you have reflective lights if you are out in the dark and keep your pet on a leash at all times.

I used pee be gone...something named like that from Target on the carpets when my dog was a puppy. You could read the label to see if it can be used on the couch and chair. The only other thing I can think of is Fabreeze, but you don't want the dog licking the chemicals, either...is it just "dog" smell, not urine? If the dog isn't eating the couch...mine did...and it's just dog smell, not urine...then I would try the Febreeze. I just make sure that my dog has regular baths to keep her from getting that dog smell and transferring it to the couch.
