Denver Laws Massacre Pit Bulls
I’m not sure where to even start this blog since I am totally appalled with the city of Denver.

Back in 1989 they enacted a law to ban all Pit Bulls, or basically any dog that resembled a Pit Bull and defined a pit bull as any dog displaying the majority of the physical traits of an American Pit Bull Terrier, an American Staffordshire Terrier or a Staffordshire Bull Terrier — or "any dog displaying the majority of physical traits of any one or more of the above breeds.". This was due to an attack that left a man with broken legs and a broken knee cap and 70 bites on his body. Even with the many protests from the residents and rescue groups, they went forward with the ban. Many people left, others handed their dogs over. Some were grandfathered in if they complied with some outrageous rules like 9 foot fences, muzzles on the dogs and so on. Thousands of Pit Bulls were euthanized.

The law was then challenged again in a one year moratorium was put on the law, however, the State Supreme Court eventually found that Denver had the right to enforce this law, and after that, many more cities followed. Thousands more Pit Bulls were then killed between 2005 and 2006, over 1454 in all.

The city themselves cannot in fact say that this law has in anyway been successful, only that there are only less Pit Bull bites and that overall, dog bites are down. However, the National average also shows that because owners are more aware and taking better care of their pets as well as better obedience, dog bites are down across the country.

This outrageous law led Dexter, a Pit Bull that was in Denver being watched by a friend, to be picked up by law enforcement after being accused of killing a Chihuahua. Kevin O’Connell was on a business trip and left Dexter with a friend who has a Presa Canario. When the report came in about the Chihuahua, the officers just assumed it was Dexter, when in fact it was the Presa Canario that killed the Chihuahua and hauled him off. It took the owner several weeks to retrieve his now sickly thin dog from those authorities.

Instead of looking for an alternative such as Portland, OR has, Denver is happy to just keep this prejudice, unfair law on their books, despite the many efforts made by veterinarians and local citizens to stop this atrocious law. In Oregon, they have lowered their repeat bites offenders by 257 percent by enacting a law that punishes the owners, not the dogs. In fact, according to their figures, the German Shepard was the dog that earned the highest severity of owner punishment the most often, which means, that under Denver law, the Pit Bulls were not the breed to cause the most damage.

This photo taken by an unidentified person shows the carcasses of thousands of Pit Bulls killed in Denver under their Pit Bull ban law.

it just sad that a city would do that just b/c most people has gotten the idea that this breed is bad and yea, like all breeds can be bad if people treat them mean and make them where they want to fight or hurt people but what about the rare but few who treat this breed with respect and their dog is nice and kind and won't fight or hurt anyone r they spared from this tragdy? but again it is sad that a breed is banned because many people public figures and not have showen us the bad since so where r the people that can show us the kind and nice side of this breed we know they can be nice so they should just judge not by breed but how the dog of that breed was raised

A decision made from fear is rarely a rational one. More rational.. charge the owner's not the dog.

My dog Bruce is mostly pit bull. When i first got him i actually had a couple scream at me for getting a pit mix. . . i by no means let them get away with that. Bruce is now about a year and a half old and has never even thought about showing his teeth to someone. He met a newborn baby last week for him first time and was more gentle than the cat was. He even gave him gentle kisses while the baby pulled his lips up almost over his eyes haha. Point is i had someone tell me to put down my puppy before he had a chance to show how great of a dog he turned out to be. I appreciate this post you put up. Thank you for showing this. (i actually had several people go out and rescue pits after they met Bruce. . . it made me so proud of him).

I can't imagine having to give up my Pit, Mocha to a certain death. It certainly is sad that the dogs have to suffer for the owner's irresponsible actions.

When I heard of this law i couldnt believe it. Ignorance is so dangerous. My best friend has an staffordshire Terrior.Chance is the sweetest and best behaved dog I have ever met. Hs is so well mannered! She actually sits in a human seatbelt and doesnt move until you tell her! She would never show her teeth to anyone! This law is just unreal. It just goes to show that ignorance and fear of the unknown are worse than anything..... Very sad ...

I'm about to foster an American Pit Bull terrier for a great friend who is deploying to Iraq. I also have 2 cats of my own, so if he wasn't a gentle giant, I would never agree to it. He is the most loving boy and generally a big baby! I hope more states follow in the path of Portland's laws regarding pet attacks. It's only logical to place blame on the owners of the pets. But what disgusts me the most is the blatant disregard of life that's displayed when people pass laws to discriminate certain breeds. How can anyone have the right to kill an animal before it even develops a personality or has a chance at life?? At least this blog has brought it to everyone's attention, so I thank you for it.

This is an outrage, my neighbor has a Pit and he is the sweetest big ole moose I have ever met. I love him. People can really be stupid sometimes.
