Pet Breast Cancer Awareness
In keeping with the theme of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I was thinking that maybe I should extend this awareness to pets as well.

Cats and Dogs can get breast cancer. Unspayed females are much more likely to develop it then those that are spayed before the age of one. The more heat cycles a female has, the greater the risk of breast cancer. Dogs are more likely to develop it then cats, however, it is much more serious and aggressive in cats then dogs.

The symptoms of breast cancer are small nodules, about the size of a pea that develop just under the skin around the mammary glands. Dogs have 10 mammary glands, 5 on each side of their chest and abdomen area. The tumors generally start more towards the ones closest to the groin area. They can double in size as fast as monthly.

Humans and dogs have such similarity in symptoms and treatment of breast cancer. The treatment of choice would first be surgery to remove the row of mammary glands along with the lymph nodes or the immediate lump, and then second would be chemotherapy. There are also anti hormonal drugs now being used to stop the cancer. Since their immune symptoms resemble each other so closely, we have been able to learn more about breast cancer in humans and how it reacts and progresses from treating it in dogs.

Also, because we see the incidence rate of breast cancer so much higher in certain breeds of dogs such as the Doberman and Springer, it has lead doctors to be able to relate that genes play an important part in developing breast cancer. Perhaps one day through these studies, we will be able to pin point exactly which gene causes breast cancer and wipe it out completely.

I think I may have lucked out with my Maxxi, She had an inverted nipple that was infected and I treated it every day with bag balm and fed her pumpkin. She's all healed up and has an actual working nipple and healthy.FYI I had a pitbull with AIDS. the only common denomitor was pumpkin or sweet potatoes In 6 weeks there was no sign of him ever having an auto immune disorder.??? makes you wonder huh???
