National Adopt A Shelter Dog Month Going On Now |

With over 10 Million animals entering shelters across the United States every year, the ASPCA founded in 1991 the National Adopt A Shelter Dog Month.
Many people have the misconception that just because a dog is in the shelter that there is something wrong with it. The truth is, it’s usually not the dogs fault, but is the fault of the people who turned it. Basic training for any pet is needed, no matter where you get your pet from. Training is not as difficult as people think, and in fact strengthens that human and their pets bond.
A recent study done by the ASPCA show that:
29% of people surrendered their dog because of behavior problems
29% surrendered due to housing problems
25% surrendered because of the incompatibility of their lifestyle
15% surrendered because owning a pet didn’t meet their expectations.
This leads to those 5 simple questions you should ask yourself before adopting a pet.
Are you ready to make a full commitment for 15 years or so to your pet’s health and welfare?
Is this pet the right one for your lifestyle, such as your kids ages, other pets you may have etc?
Is there a primary caregiver in your household that will be responsible for the pet?
Can you afford the pet? Not only food, shelter, toys and treats, but medical also.
Are you committed to making your pet a good canine citizen through socialization and training skills?
If you answered no to any of these questions, adopting a pet is not for you.

i have question about my teddy bear . i got her from someone esle and i think thay was mean to her but iam not. i babie her and treat her with all the love that i gave her . but my question is she wets on the floor when she get really excited about going out for walk and then when we live the house she barks for hours and hours i dontknw what to do. my vet gave me medcation for her .it seens work for her batter at bed time. she has hard time learing not bark lie from 8:30 pm to 4am. and she not even in kennel nither. two family had her be fore i,ve ever got her.
i was woundering if you had any ideas for me. if you can you let me know thanks. i really care about my dog teddy bear. she is italain grayhound mix with whippet .from mindy.

Cindy, Both my pets are from the Humane Socitey. I believe in adopting my pets from there because there are so many animals that are homeless and it is ashame that these animals are put down because they are unwanted! If people would just get there pets spayed or nutered it would save alot of these problems!

I adopted my dog from a shelter almost two years ago. They picked him up as a stray, and the someone adopted him and took him back a week later. But he's the awesomest dog! When I got him, he was two years old and already housebroken, and he quickly learned to get along with my cats. He's sweet, healthy, playful, and just the best!

we just adopted a lab mix from a rescue place in Sarasota FL that is awesome. Samson is 3, well behaved, and fits right in the family. His "sister" Maggie, our shephard, and he get along great. The place we got him from was super, the people are very caring, the overall experience was great, and I get the satisfaction of knowing Samson has a forever home. Thanks so much.
