Keeping Your Pets Safe In All Types Of Weather Conditions |
|
Often time’s people think of only summer and winter as being harsh on their pets or a time of year extra precautions are needed. This isn’t true. There is nasty weather conditions all year long in all parts of the country that need to be addressed, just not heat or cold. There are other dangers between the frostbite and heatstroke seasons.
Take for example, the Midwest Tornado season, or the Southern hurricane season, or even Earthquake season in the California region. These are all times that your pets are more vulnerable to weather conditions just like you are. For tornadoes or earthquake season, make sure you have everything packed for your pet for quick evacuations, including a medical kit, their vets names, any medications they may need, food, water and leashes or other items that they may need while not at home. A microchip is also advisable incase they escape or get lost in the crowd
Springtime brings about allergies for many of the breeds and even though they are seasonal and not really serious, they need to be addressed to make your pet more comfortable. Daily Benadryl or a steroid shot or oral medications can be administered by your vet for to make them comfortable.
Fall is known for aggressive thunderstorm activity which can put your pet in hiding for months or cause such severe anxiety that they can harm themselves. Anti anxiety medications from your vet such diazepam or even a natural preparation like Be Calm can be used to help them overcome some of their anxiety.
And though the temperature may not be as hot and humid in the spring and fall, the sun beating down on your pets head or the hot pavement they walk on can also impact them. Keeping them in a shaded area or limiting their time in the sun, walking on grass and not pavement or even wearing some booties can help. Sunscreen is also advisable. Do not leave your pet in a car, the sun beating in even at this time of year can kill them.
So while seasons just may be colored leaves and ski slopes or swimming to you, for your pets, its still a time of precautions and safety preparations. |
