For The Love Of A Marine, Nubs, The Wonder Dog
Imagine yourself in the middle of a war zone, you’re thousands of miles away from home, enduring all the hardships that most of us can’t even imagine while serving in the armed forces, and then you meet up with a dog, not just any dog, but one that befriends you, one with his ears cut off to make him look meaner. A dog that will not forget you nor let your forget him, that’s exactly what “Nubs” so affectionately named by Maj Brian Dennis has experienced.

October of 2007, Maj Dennis and 11 men were patrolling the borders of Syria when a pack of wild dogs approached them. When Maj Dennis bent over to call them, one in particular run to him. Noticing how starving the dogs was, he fed him some of his pop tarts and bits of ham, and the bonding began. While walking the parameters at night patrolling, Nubs would be there right alongside Maj Dennis as if he was on guard duty with him. Each time Dennis returned to the border fort, Nubs would greet him heartily and hang with him and when Dennis would leave, Nubs would run full force alongside the Humvee for miles till he could no longer keep up.

In December when Dennis returned to the border fort, he found Nubs had been stabbed in the side with a screwdriver and was deeply wounded and developed a huge infection. The pain being so fierce that Nubs could not even lay down to sleep. Immediately Dennis got out his medical kit and poured antiseptic on the wound and dressed it as well as fed Nubs some antibiotics disguised in peanut butter. However, when Dennis left the fort this time, he could not get Nubs out of his mind, and upon his return, was so glad to see that Nubs had indeed healed and was doing well.

The next time Dennis left the fort however, Nubs was not content to stay behind, and even though he could not keep up with the Humvee, he traveled for two days through packs of wild dogs and wolves, making his way 70 miles to meet up with his friend near the Jordanian border, beaten and chewed up. Dennis knew that he could not leave him again after the licking had stopped. Most of the men in the camp loved having the company and built him a doghouse and were happy to have him, but some of the Marines complained and Dennis was instructed to get rid of the dog. He knew then his only alternative was to get Nubs to the states. Raising over $5000 with the help of family and friends, Nubs was then sent “home”. A month later when Dennis finished his deployment, he headed directly home to his friend who was being looked after and trained and properly cared for. Dennis feared Nubs would not remember him, but his fears were laid to rest when at first site, Nubs jumped into his arms and licked him profusely.

Nubs: The True Story Of A Mutt, A Marine & A Miracle, a children’s picture book, has been published. You can see Dennis and Nubs on the Conan O’Brien Tonight show on Monday night.

I really hope this is true, the basics are not that dissimilar to how man and dog became known to be best friends. It somehow tells my spine look for a publicity stunt. I pray it is not.It will be fact checked and if the response is "we are fighting a war we dont have time" then there will be more reason to question. because in my
personal experience marines don't forget. "Semper Fi "is what you are Gentlemen . May God Wacth Over You.
