The Boxer is a well-conditioned and powerful dog with an intelligent and alert expression. The Boxer loves to be by his owner, yet remains a very instinctual guardian and these traits have allowed them to succeed as couriers during times of war and as seeing-eye dogs. The Boxer currently ranks as one of the most popular dogs in the United States according to recent statistics.

Boxers first surfaced in Germany in the 19th century, and were originally used for dog fighting and to run down and hold large game such as boars and bison until the hunter arrived. Known for standing up on its hind legs and punching at its opponent, the Boxer appears to box with its front paws. The Boxer was imported to America after World War I, and began to grow in popularity in the 1930s.
