english mastiff information

The English Mastiff is an extremely powerful and strong canine with a large body and broad skull. The weight of an average male English Mastiff is between 170lbs-220lbs yet the largest recorded English Mastiff was recognized at 343 pounds and stood over three feet high.

The name "Mastiff" was probably derived from the word "masty" which meant "powerful". Descendents of the ancient Molosser and Alaunt, they are officially recognized as the oldest British breed originating in the Sixth Century B.C. Evidence can be shown that the Mastiff also came to America on the famous Mayflower ship but official documentation of the breed did not exist until the latter part of the 1800s.
