The French Bulldog continues to be an extremely popular companion dog and is characteristically small yet muscular with a smooth coat. The trademark short face and big bat ears of the French Bulldog make it a unique breed prized for their affection to people and active personalities. "Frenchies" as they are called can be found in various colors including white, fawn, brindle, and similar combinations.
The French Bulldog was bred as a lap dog in 19th Century England, and was brought to France when the Industrial Revolution forced lacemakers to relocate to the region. Americans quickly took to the French Bulldog and in the late 1800's the "toy bulldogs" as they were known at the time came to be as "French Bulldogs".
