They live on the forest floor in northern south america, often sheltering in underneath logs and in leaf litter. The common ameiva's diet consists of mainly insects and spiders. The female lays several clutches of eggs during March to December.

The Common ameiva (Ameiva ameiva) is a species of lizard in the genus Ameiva. They grow to around 45-50 cm with a streamlined body and pointed head. Both sexes are brown with irregular black spots but the male has a bright green area in the centre of his back.
