The Jack Russell Terrier is a sturdy and compact dog measuring about 15" high. Most are white in coloration with black or tan markings and dense coats. Jack Russell Terriers tend to weigh around 15 pounds and are primarily working terriers built to pursue the red fox and enter its den. The Jack Russell Terrier is known to have an endless amount of energy, extreme intelligence, loud vocals, and a fearless attitude.
John Russell, a hunter born in 1795, was the first to breed the white fox terrier that we know today. His intent was to breed a terrier with a large amount of stamina for hunting and great courage to chase foxes that fled underground. These characteristics gained the Jack Russell Terrier much respect and popularity as a companion and hunting dog.
