Toy Spaniels became a popular lap pet in Europe and Charles II of England became very fond of this dog type. As trade expended in the 18th century, pugs and other canine breeds arrived from all over the world and became popular. These dogs soon began to breed with the spaniel lap dogs, and in today's King Charles Spaniel you can clearly see its ancestry to the Pug. To prevent confusion with the popular Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, the King Charles Spaniel was officially recognized in the United States as the English toy Spaniel.
