First bred in 1989 as a cross between a Labrador Retriever and the Standard Poodle, the Labradoodle has quickly become a popular choice as a family pet. The original breeders aimed to combine the low-shedding coat of a Poodle with the intelligence and friendliness of the Labrador Retriever. Labradoodles are commonly used around the world today as therapy and guide dogs, yet they are not considered a "true" breed since their puppies don't have predictable characteristics.
The Labradoodle may have soft to wiry hair, which is curly or straight, and like their Labrador ancestry they have a great affinity for the water. Just like their parents, which are arguably the most intelligent dog breeds, the Labradoodle possesses extreme intelligence and trainability and have been known to be able to obey verbal commands as well as sign language.
