The Labrador Retriever from Canada is still the most popular breed in the United States, according to American Kennel Club (AKC) statistics. This gentle, smart and family-friendly dog is also a versatile hunting breed, which comes in three colors - yellow, black and chocolate. They have proven to be fantastic guide dogs for the blind because of their aptitude to please their master, as well as the best dog for search-and-rescue teams or in narcotics detection units.
Originating in Newfoundland, Labrador Retrievers were initially used to work alongside fisherman, helping pulling in nets, and catching fish that escaped from lines. After being bred with Setters, Spaniels and other Retrievers, the Labrador Retriever developed its skills as a true retriever. "Labs," as they are affectionately called, were bred primarily to perform a retriever of game, with a stable temperament for a variety of activities beyond hunting.
