Dogs Rescued from Notorious Puppy Store
On Monday, notorious Florida-based puppy retailer Wizard of Claws filed for bankruptcy, resulting in the shuttering of the store and the seizure by the bankruptcy trustee of the store's remaining puppy inventory.

When The Humane Society of the United States learned the bankruptcy trustee intended to auction off the remaining puppies housed at the store, an anonymous donor stepped in to sponsor the dogs, and The HSUS brokered a deal to have all 32 dogs placed for adoption into loving, permanent homes.

The closure comes on the heels of a recent ruling by a Broward County judge refusing to dismiss a major class action lawsuit filed by Humane Society of the United States members and other individuals against Wizard of Claws for selling sick and dying puppies through its retail pet store and over the Internet to hundreds of unsuspecting consumers.

The 32 puppies seized by the bankruptcy trustee will be transferred to the custody of The HSUS and the Broward County Humane Society today.

The dogs, which include Yorkies, Chihuahuas, Maltese, Pomeranians, dachshunds and Shih-tzus, will each be given evaluations and medical inspections as well as any needed veterinary treatment before being offered for adoption.

"This is a wonderful and unexpected happy ending for these puppies, and we are enormously grateful to the dogs' anonymous benefactor and the Broward County Humane Society for making this rescue possible," said Jonathan R. Lovvorn, vice president and chief counsel for animal protection litigation and research for The HSUS.

"The bankruptcy and liquidation of Wizard of Claws should be a wake-up call for puppy mill dog peddlers everywhere, and serve as a stark reminder of why people should never buy puppies from pet stores or over the Internet."

The plaintiffs in the class action lawsuit are being represented on a pro bono basis by the New York, Miami, and Houston offices of Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP.

A similar class action suit against Ohio-based Petland, Inc. is now pending in the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona.

Thank God there are angels watching over pets and rush in to help them when they are in need
We got our little beagle on the internet There was a picture of this little 4 month old little guy with a 3 inch metal chain with both ends attached to his collar
He is the best friend anyone could ask for Sure he has problems but love and caring are working out all his little problems
I feel anyone who does anything and i mean anything to one of Gods' little friends should get back three fold what they have done.
I have no patience nor room for any one that hurts one of these special friends
If they need help I'll surely help them rehabitate them

I couldn't agree more - people like this should be barred forever from selling animals. My two dogs are rescues and I'm more than happy with them. One can be a behavioral problem but we keep working on it and hopefully one of these days he will let it go.

I bought my Shit-zu from a puppy store in Hollywood, Fl.; and luckily I took him for the Free Vet visit w shots as on the papers given to me. He had been real sick! We got him treated just in time to save his life! I am always being asked by my 5 yr.old & 8 yr.old little girls what happened to all the puppies that were with our Big Sexy at the "dog store". My answer is Only God really knows, but that issue has bothered us all for 2 yrs. now! I pray people are secure when buying their new best friends-always! Puppy mills are very inhumane! I hope more stores get busted! Our family has 5 indoor cats & my friend, my shit-zu Big Sexy! May God guide & bless us all who love & respect animals!!!
Truly,

I think its about time someone started shutting down these terrible places that support puppy mills and dont care about the animals the take in,even if they Are going to turn around and sell them. People should only take on an animal if they truly love animals and that goes for pet stores too. I glad someone is finally able too strike back at these uncaeing jerks and get them were it hurts--- their pocketbooks. That is all those people seem to ever care about.

I am happy to see that someone stepped forward and is helping these dogs find happy and healthy homes. My step-son and daughter-in-law bought a puppy from a local puppy store that has since changed owners since then. But the initial cost was $700 and then almost another $1000 for the vet bills to keep the dog alive. Granted the puppy grew into a happy and healthy dog, but it was an expensive lesson to learn. I have two wonderful little girls that I got from a breeder off the internet, but I made sure I checked out the breeder all the way around. Good luck to the ones that adopt these dogs.

I am very lucky I bought my little girl Maltese at a puppy mill store, I paid 850.00 for her, but thank God she is in good health. She has been my best friend for 6 and 1/2 years and the vet said she would be around for along time. God Bless the folks that saved the 32 babies from that life.

there are so many unwanted, neglected and abused animals, that anyone wanting to get an animal should adopt from their local shelter, etc. there is petfinder and many other places to look. Don't let these "puppy mill breeders" stay in business. Too many of those dogs are inbred and sickly. Most of the time, they are sick or have genetic problems. It's terrible the way people use these animals to make a buck! There are literally thousands of animal put to sleep every day.
