Pa. Dog Named Runner-Up in The Humane Society of the United States’ Second Annual Dogs of Valor Awards

WASHINGTON — The Humane Society of the United States is proud to announce that Hero, a German shepherd mix from Jim Thorpe, Pa., has been chosen as a runner-up in the Second Annual Dog of Valor Awards. The Dogs of Valor Awards, sponsored by PetPlan Pet Insurance, honor and celebrate dogs who have shown extraordinary courage or resolve by heroically helping a person in need. Hero was chosen to receive the honor by a panel of celebrity judges that included big-screen Dog of Valor Benji, "Americas Favorite Animal Artist" Ron Burns, professional race car champion Randy Pobst and televisions courtroom animal advocate, Judge David Young.

In January 2008, Heros owner Dennis Redline, took him for a midday walk. As they made their way behind a building, Redline slipped on some ice, hitting his head and losing consciousness. Immediately, Hero ran barking throughout the apartment complex, causing neighbors to call the police. When officers arrived several hours later, the frantic dog led them straight to Redline, who was still unconscious. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was placed in intensive care, and remained in a coma for six days. Sadly, on Dec. 1, 2008, Hero peacefully passed away with Redline by his side.

Sarah Speed, The HSUS Pennsylvania state director will present the award in Heros honor to Redline at a ceremony in Plainfield, N.J. on Saturday, July 18 at 1 p.m. at the Plainfield Area Humane Society. Hero spent seven years at the Plainfield Area Humane Society before Redline adopted him.

"The HSUS Dogs of Valor contest is designed to showcase those examples of our canine best friends going above and beyond the typical role of pets providing their human companions with love, attention, and protection- to the point where lives are saved," said Speed. "Heros effort is a shining example of not only what the human-animal bond can accomplish, but also of the intense devotion an older pet can give. The HSUS thanks the Plainfield Area Humane Society for caring for him for all those years and making this miracle possible."

To honor Heros valiant efforts, Redline will receive a framed Dogs of Valor certificate, an original sterling silver dog tag by Bella Tocca Tags and a signed, limited edition giclée, "Sirius," by Ron Burns.
