American Humane Association to Michael Vick: It’s Time to Prove Yourself Worthy and Humane
The American Humane Association today offered this reaction to Friday’s signing of Michael Vick by the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles. It is from Marie Belew Wheatley, president and CEO of the 131-year-old organization that protects both animals and children:

“As publicly stated in late July, American Humane lobbied neither for nor against Vick’s reinstatement in the NFL, but did express its sincere hope and expectation that he make good on his stated intention of becoming a visible and strong influence against dog fighting and animal cruelty, and that he will use his celebrity to become a positive role model for compassion and empathy to both people and animals.

“Now that he has a contract to resume a very visible career in the public eye – a lucrative career that few people ever have the chance to experience even once, let alone a second time after committing a horrific and inhumane crime – it’s time for Michael Vick to demonstrate he can change and be a force for good. In particular, we hope he can become a positive role model for young people, and that, in light of the incredible second chance he has been given, he now proves himself truly worthy and humane.”

Unfortunately, you can talk the talk and walk the walk but you can never change the personality of someone who would kill an animal with their bare hands the way Vick did by electrocuting, hanging and suffocating them because they didn't add to his millions.

I think anyone capable of hurting an animal is capable of far worse. I think Vick deserved more than he got. I wrote NFL a letter I got nothing in response so I threw all my NFL stuff in the trash....I am done with the NFL all together.

I feel the individual Mr. Vick never fully paid penance for his sin or crime. It was such a heinous crime it is not the position of the courts to rehabilitate him, only to punish him for his crime against man. The courts and system failed and has set precedence for future rulings. I do not see this as Justice. I will exercise my right and boycott anything associated with Mr. Vick.

Mike Vick in my eyes is a loser! To make dogs fight? Tell me the real purpose of that! I heard on the news tonight that Dicks Sporting Goods Store will not sell his shirt! GOOD FOR THEM

Never trust anyone who would harm animals such as dogs and cats. there is nothing they can do to untarnish their reputation. Americans can show their displeasure by not consuming any products endorsed by or connected to Vicks.

As a Phila. Eagles fan I am appalled that they would sign Vick on to the team, I love dogs more than football so I will not be watching any Eagles games until he is gone!

I am sorry, but I just can't agree with the NFL's decision to resign Vick. I hope the Eagles have an awful season and ticket sales go down. That may seem cruel, but it is nothing compared to the cruelty suffered by those poor dogs. Vick is just going to move on with his life and career making more money, while helpless animals lost their lives.
