11/3/2009 : DNA Testing
Has anyone ever had DNA testing performed on their dog? The purpose is to determine what breed(s) are encompassed in your pet. I heard the cost was approximately $45 and at first, I said "no way Mom! spend the money on some new Nyla bones!". However, as time goes on, Mom gets more curious as to who/what my biological parents were. We're pretty sure one of them was a rottie, but what about the other? I'm only about 52 pounds or so and turned a year in July. I'm not going to grow much more and I have a different tail than a rottie. One neighbor said he thought my other breed was pointer, which would make sense with my hunting skills and looks. Back to the point, if you had DNA testing, were you satisfied with the results? How much did it cost? Was it worth it? Did you have it conducted through your vet?

Hi Pluto Moses had to take one for AKC Registration. No they do not require it on all registrations but you can be ask to. I have the DNA on all sets of Moses grandparent and parents. Reason being is Moses breeder is keeping There Great Dane blood lines pure in color. Most great Danes have litters of puppies now with every color in them. Well Moses parents breed only mantles in color. So they have to prove there blood lines will only create that color. Even though i am not breeding Moses i was requested a DNA and i took it. It was 45.00 if i am remembering correctly. They can take a mouth swab or blood test. I thought it was pretty cool to see that Moses bloodlines are of the best quality. Especially since Danes life expectancy is 8-10 years. I am praying they are wrong. Moses was done at the vet and sent to AKC.. AKC offered to mail me a kit and i could mail it back to them after giving it myself. IF i am still correct on this there price was 40.00?? But if you decide to go the route of the vet. I would wait until Pluto is going for a regular visit. Or you might get a visit charge on top of the test making it a lot more. hope this helps.. If it were me i would give him the test it can tell a lot of things like could he be prone to sicknesses that his breed is capable of, hereditary ETC..Hope this helps... Moses

I have never heard of that in the UK - Dread to think what parentage I would have if they did!! I like to think I'm pure bred, rather than my biological cat mum being a loose cat and going with the first 'Tom' that came along!! Purrs TC x

We've heard both good and bad reviews. Some say they got different results from different labs. So maybe get an opinion from a trusted vet as to which are the best labs. Mom's great grandmother was adopted so she did a test that follwed female sides back, and results were European. Jarmy

I've looked on line myself, curious whats mixed with my beagle side. I found a lot of places offering the test, they send you a kit, you swab your pets mouth and send it back, not sure if I want to spend the money, but glad it's offered if I decide to.
