A type of German dog breed, the Schnauzer originally was found in Germany around the 1400s. "Schnauze" (snout in German) was the term used to describe this dog due to its furry muzzle and quickly became the basis for their name. Schnauzers are found in three unique types; the miniature schnauzer, the standard schnauzer, and the giant schnauzer.

The Schnauzer was first bred to catch rats and as a guard dog. Miniature Schnauzers are the cross between Affenpinschers and Poodles while the Giant Schnauzer is the cross of a Great Dane, Bouviers and Collies.
